Street Art - A Brief Intro

For centuries art has been the finest way of self-expression. Whether an individual is in harmony or in conflict with circumstances around them, they still strive to express and transfer their feelings to others. The ways of expression have always varied. Especially because humanity relentlessly keeps looking for and finds new ways for art creation.

Contemporary art is an excellent example of how many new means of depiction have artists accumulated over the years. And all these new ways of expression are renewed variations of old. Street art is exactly one of those reincarnated art forms and holds an irreplaceable spot in contemporary art. It has a long and controversial history and because of its nature it has always been surrounded by the discussion whether it should be considered as an art form or just another manifestation of vandalism.

Roots In Rome

In order to find the roots of street art we need to look thousands of years back, when primitive people still living in caves had a desire to paint their lives with primitive paintings on the walls. This is how simple scenes depicting hunting and daily life have remained on the ancient walls. The desire to paint on the walls continued for years. For example in Ancient Rome locals used walls as a type of old version of social media. They would scratch out different quotes, political slogans, and information about ongoing events and even leave messages for their favorite champions and gladiators. Thus slogans of protest and political or social commentary on the walls is the precursor to street art and continue to exist as one aspect of the genre.

Modern Legends

According to the latest legend, the history of graffiti starts in 1942, when a worker named Kilroy wrote “Kilroy was here” on the boxes full of bombs made in Detroit. Later on, other soldiers who survived bombings in Europe started doing the same: they were writing their names on the walls. This continued in Philadelphia and very soon along with the written messages, first installations appeared in the streets. In the late 60s this trend started spreading from Philadelphia to New-York, where it was mostly appearing in poor neighborhoods. For locals back then graffiti was associated with vandalism and illegal activity. Eventually this tendency was overthrown and from the 70s the new era has begun. Street art themes are inexhaustible at any given time. Though often it was and continues to be focused on political and social protest.

Keith Haring, the most famous of 70s street artists, who was known as “the king of street art”, received a lot of attention not only for his unique style but also for the fact that his work was inseparable from his activism. He always had the specific message; he was putting those strong messages into each of his works of art. We can still come across his pieces of art in the streets of New-York to this day.

A distinguished street artist of the same period - Jean-Michael Basquiat began his career by spray painting enigmatic inscriptions in the subways and thus made his unique art forever unforgettable.

By the 80s the popularity of street art had reached its peak. By this time street artists and their creative work started to receive attention from critics. Some of them moved from streets to art galleries. They even found their way into the press - a prestigious magazine “Art Forum” devoted an extensive article to street art in 1981.

Soon after, the works of street artists and other famous painters were exhibited side by side. Later street art exhibitions were successfully held not only in New-York, but also in leading art galleries of Europe. This is how “vandalism” got popularized as one of the crucial forms of modern art.

Train Bombing, New York 1970s

Street art, as an urban movement that constantly strived to occupy the city space was not just a New-York thing. It gradually continued to spread throughout the world. Artists were constantly looking for places with a special history which kept some memories. In that case they were not only focused on the aesthetic aspect of their work but on the importance of the messages they left to society to engage them in a dialogue. The Berlin wall is the finest example of this because along with the memories and history, it also preserves numerous works of art by the unknown and known artists.

Nowadays, in street art along with graffiti many other types of it have been identified. Some artists started using stencils, while others continue spray painting to create murals. The area of street art has expanded even further and by now it covers the walls of many cities and towns of almost every continent. Nevertheless, street art is still banned in many countries, although in many cases the city government makes way for artists to paint on specific walls. Especially now that many great and prestigious street art festivals have established around the world. During those festivals street artists from different countries are gathering in one city and painting on the different locations. There are many festivals but the most famous ones are Bristol’s Upfest, NuArt in Norway, Montreal’s Mural, Arco Madrid and etc. In 2019 for the first time in Georgia international Mural Fest was held and a number of the walls were painted with murals in Tbilisi and later in Kutaisi as well.
